Topic: Mid-Infrared Up-conversion Imaging and Spectroscopy using Short Pulse Light Sources


DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical sensor technologies. We are now seeking a PhD student to do research within short pulse upconversion. The Research will be carried out in the Optical Sensor Technologi group at Risø Campus. Starting date is November 1st 2017.

Responsibilities and tasks
The mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength range is an emerging and important new topic for frontier research. Its general importance relates to a multitude of mid-IR industrial and biomedical sensor applications. Chemical finger prints of most complex molecules such as those found in food, tissue or catalytic compounds all have vibrational spectra in the mid-IR, thus identifiable through mid-IR spectroscopy.

The main idea is not to develop a new IR camera, but to convert IR signals into the near infrared, subsequently detected using existing NIR CCD or InGaAs cameras.

In this project upconversion methods will be explored for the detection of femto- picosecond pulses. Using a tuneable short pulse (ps / fs) mid-IR light source for excitation or probing of the sample and synchronizing with the pump light will allow the demonstration of ultra-fast upconversion imaging in the fs / ps regime as an enabling mid-IR technology. Considerable attention will be paid to increase the spatial and spectral resolution of the up-conversion system, which will lead us in the research of new non-linear crystals. Furthermore, a theoretical study of the upconversion process of very short pulses is needed in order to optimize performance.

Experiments will take place at different locations. At the Optical Sensor Technology group we have a 1 ps synchronised 1.55/1.9 µm laser which can be used for initial experiments. At the Nonlinear Optics and Biophotonics group/DTU Fotonik headed by Professor Peter Uhd Jepsen the candidate will have access to a mid-IR OPO extending into well into the LWIR range (>10 µm). Through our collaboration partners at ICFO/Spain and Radiantis the candidate can access existing highly stable and powerful ps/fs OPOs in the 2-4.5 µm range. We expect that the candidate will be seconded at ICFO for a period of time working with these advanced laser sources for fs detection. Later in the project also 5-8 µm ps and ns OPOs will be available.

Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering/Physics or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering/Physics.
